Scientific Rationale on the Regenerative Surgery Conference

Tissue regeneration is based upon clinical advances that have brought medical science a step ahead of the previous medical concept of repairing damaged human organism and replacing from outside what is no longer functioning.

Regeneration stimulates the human body to produce new young cells, new tissues and even new organs.

Many scientific researches in this disciplinary domain are focused on stem cells; they are meant to understand how to stimulate their differentiation. Some human stem cells have already been differentiated in order to produce cardiomyocytes, glial cells, neurons, endothelial cells and insulin-producing cells.

Research, though, is not restricted to embryonic stem cells, since adult stem cells too are being now investigated and used as potential sources of cellular differentiation towards tissue lines that are different from each other.

For instance, mesenchymal stem cells extracted from adults’ fat can differentiate into diverse cell lines, such as bone tissue cells, vascular cells and/or fat cells themselves.

In addition to that, it is to be noted that some researchers are investigating the possibility to identify and characterize the microenvironment – also defined as niche - of stem cell populations in order to affect their behaviour in vivo as well as in vitro.

Moreover, small molecules like cell growth factors are just another system to stimulate in vivo cell regeneration. Besides, research into nanomaterials could pave the way for new administering systems of growth factors in order to stimulate cellular regeneration.

The conference on Regenerative Surgery intends focusing on and spreading the applications opportunities of stem cells in the surgery field. This is why it is scheduled on progressive sessions which, starting out from stem cell biology, will extend to their clinic applications in some systemic diseases pertaining to internal medicine, and therefore to the tissue engineering, to finally address different surgical disciplines.
The conference will end with both a session concerning science ethic and advancements in the light of the current European regulation system and, at the same time, a session about the future of lipotransfer, either in facial and body contour surgeries.
